He is, indeed, the Master of Suspense. Psycho was made in 1960 and it scared the crap out of me. He gave the fictional character, Norman Bates, the profile of a true psychopath. And thus, made him seem extremely realistic, unlike many Hollywood serial killers, which were just angry/crazy men with masks and weapons.
He produced seven brilliant horror films, like I Walked With a Zombie, Cat People and The Leopard Man. He lived and breathed shadow and amazing atmosphere.
I'll always love Hitchcock, but he's no match for Val Lewton.
